Rigorous Benchmarks for Ethics and Accountability Boost Public Trust
In the spring of 2009, Victoria Theatre Association was awarded with the Standards for Excellence certification by the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations (OANO).
The Standards for Excellence certification reflects a conscientious and lengthy review of a nonprofit organization’s program operations, governance, human resources, financial management and fundraising practices. Nonprofits from around the state are eligible to apply for the Standards program.
“It takes great dedication to undergo the certification process,” said OANO’s Executive Director Jennifer Williams. “We are proud to certify Victoria Theatre Association. Their work shows the commitment they have to those who benefit from their programs, their contributors and to the public.”
Victoria Theatre Association is one of 25 nonprofit organizations in Ohio who have achieved the Standards certification. Attaining the Standards designation enables each organization to display the “Seal of Excellence” on all of its materials. Each group voluntarily agrees to undergo an anonymous and rigorous peer review process to confirm adherence to a comprehensive code of conduct that promotes accountability through self-regulation.
“We’re proud to have undergone this rigorous process and achieved this certification,” stated Michael Roediger, Vice President – Development for Victoria Theatre Association. “It was gratifying to receive recognition at the Fourth Annual Ohio Nonprofit Excellence Award Luncheon attended by more than 250 nonprofit executives, leaders and legislators at the Ohio Statehouse. I have to thank my colleagues for their assistance in compiling the data and policies required to apply for certification. It is our hope that this certification will deepen the trust our donors and sponsors already have in this non-profit arts organization.”
The Standards program was created in 1995 with grants from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to advance the efficacy of nonprofit organizations. Shortly after the formation of the trial program in Maryland, Ohio was selected to participate.
OANO is a statewide membership association of nearly 550 organizations that provides leadership, education and advocacy to enhance the ability of Ohio’s nonprofit organizations to serve their communities.
