September 12 will find downtown Dayton alive and pulsing with artistic life! Urban Nights Arts Fest (part of the Downtown Dayton Partnership’s Urban Nights event) will boast a new feature this year: an Open House & Arts Market at the Schuster Center and Victoria Theatre, from 5 – 9 p.m. that night.

“It seemed like the perfect opportunity to invite people into our home spaces,” says Victoria Theatre Association President & CEO Dione Kennedy. “We wanted to enhance what Culture Works has already done with the Urban Nights Arts Fest. The Open House & Arts Market will kick off the arts season in style and give people a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the theatres.”

Participating in the Open House & Arts Market will be the resident companies of the Schuster Center, the Victoria Theatre and The Loft Theatre: CITYFOLK, Dayton Ballet, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Dayton Opera, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, The Human Race Theatre Company, Rhythm in Shoes, and Victoria Theatre Association.

The Open House & Arts Market will feature a variety of events and activities at all three venues:

We’ve been told by reliable sources that A Hard Day’s Night played at the Victory Theatre back in 1964 – we’d love to hear from anyone who saw it here or at other Dayton-area theatres. If you have other good Beatles stories from the heydey of Beatlemania (like, for instance, you saw them in concert, bumped into them on the street, etc.), we’d love to hear those, too! Take a couple of minutes and post a comment below.

The summer has flown by, and we’re heading into the final weekend of the Michelob Ultra Cool Films series. We wrap up the series with the Fab Four in A Hard Day’s Night.

It was 1964, and Beatlemania was at its most frenzied when John, Paul, George and Ringo starred in their first feature film. A Hard Night follows a madcap “day in the life” of The Beatles, as they try to elude hordes of screaming fans and still get to the Big Show on time, in spite of Paul’s troublemaking grandfather and Ringo’s arrest!

Directed by Richard Lester and filmed in six-and-a-half weeks, A Hard Day’s Night has come to be regarded as a pop culture classic and continues to delight audiences, nearly 45 years after its release. The film is, of course, full of great Beatles classics, including “I Should Have Known Better,” “And I Love Her,” “Tell Me Why,” “If I Fell,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “A Hard Day’s Night.”

Watch: The trailer to A Hard Day’s Night

Be sure to check back here later this week for details about how you can get tickets to RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles at A Hard Day’s Night.

We’re heading into the last two weekends of the Michelob Ultra Cool Films series! This weekend, it’s another great movie musical, with Barbra Streisand in Hello, Dolly!.

Directed by Gene Kelly, the musical comedy earned three Oscars, including awards for Best Art Direction, Best Music and Best Sound. Hello, Dolly! features a talented cast that includes Barbra Streisand as Dolly Levi, Walter Matthau as Horace Vandergelder, and Michael Crawford as Cornelius Hackl.

Dolly has a mission to marry Horace Vandergelder, “the well known, unmarried, half-a-millionaire.” Through her mission, Dolly manages to match up several other individuals in the process. The film is based on the popular Broadway musical, which was in turn based on Thorton Wilder’s play, The Matchmaker.

The film contains many memorable songs, including “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” “Ribbons Down My Back,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Elegance,” “It Only Takes a Moment” and, of course, the famous title song.  Legendry jazz musician Louis Armstrong, who had a huge hit with the title song, makes a cameo appearance in the film.

Boyz II Men will be on stage at the Schuster Center on Saturday, November 29, at 8 p.m. Tickets are priced at $61, $56, $46 and $38, and go on sale Friday, September 12, at 5 p.m., in conjunction with downtown Dayton’s Urban Nights.
