The best of soul is coming to the Schuster Center on January 31 at 8 p.m. with 70’s Soul Jam. All your soul favorites from the 70’s are back and more dynamic than ever!  Outstanding soul artists The Stylistics, Delfonics, Chi-Lites, and The Manhattans share the Schuster Center stage.

THE STYLISTICS
The Stylistics, a Philadelphia-based quartet is one of the most accomplished soul bands ever.  With their charisma, style and harmony, they evolved into a best-selling group with a remarkable 10 straight top-ten hits in the 1970’s.  Their first single, “You’re A Big Girl Now” produced by the ingenious creator, Thom Bell, won the hearts of a nation and became a top-ten hit instantly.  Under the production of Bell, The Stylistics went on to produce 12 consecutive top-ten hits from 1971-1974.  This was not the end of success for the soulful Stylistics.  Songs, such as the Grammy Nominated hit, “You Make Me Feel Brand New”, introduced a different, smoother style to the soul scene. Their other hits include “Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart”, “You Are Everything” “Betcha By Golly Wow” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New”.

DELFONICS
The Delfonics, known for their sleek, soulful “Philadelphia sound” have graced the stage and the airwaves for nearly 40 years.  The combination of sexy melodies and showmanship has made this threesome a worldwide success.  Under the guidance of Thom Bell, The Delfonics released their chart topping hit song, “La La Means I Love You” in 1968.  With their momentum and popularity growing, the group then released hit singles, “You Get Yours, I’ll Get Mine”, “I’m Sorry”, and “Ready of Not”.  But their success certainly did not end there.  In 1971, The Delfonics were awarded a Grammy for the single, “Didn’t I”.  The group, which has changed R&B’s past, continues to influence the present and future of soul music.

MANHATTANS
The Grammy, gold and platinum award winning group, have sold over twelve million records throughout their career.  With hits, such as “Kiss And Say Goodbye” and “There’s No Me Without You”, The Manhattans have established themselves as a soul music icon.  Under the direction of Edward “Sonny” Bivens, the group created fresh and innovative sounds of soul.  Since 1990, The Manhattans have performed throughout the United States and Canada.  In 1994, The Manhattans, under the guidance of producer Stephen C. Washington, released the “Now” album.  Included in this album is the gospel classic “Touch The Hem of His Garment” and the original “Save The Best For Last”.

CHI-LITES
The Chi-Lites have shaped the sound of soul in the Midwest since the 1970’s.  With 11 top ten R&B singles during a single decade, The Chi-Lites proved to be consistent with their popular style and sound.  Some of their top-selling singles on the 70’s were “Have You Seen Her” and “Oh Girl”.  These soulful ballads were all embraced by a nation and topped the R&B charts. In the early 1990’s, The Chi-Lites entered the studio with a dynamic blend of all new material.  Songs, such as “Happy Music”, add an up-tempo flare to their music, while “Solid Love Affair” brings listeners back to a more traditional ballad.  The magic of The Chi-Lites has proven to be undiminished and will always be a vital sound to Chicago soul.

The fifth annual Visual Voices art exhibit will return to the Schuster Center next week, and will be on display throughout the month of February. The exhibit is part of Victoria Theatre Association’s second African-American Arts Festival.

Victoria Theatre Association is once again collaborating with Willis “Bing” Davis of EbonNia Gallery on the exhibit. This year’s exhibit continues the theme of the past two years and is titled “Dayton Skyscrapers III: An African American Visual Artists’ Tribute to African-American Heroes of Dayton, Ohio”.

Visual Voices is a visual arts tribute which identifies, celebrates and preserves the legacy of the many African-Americans who have made, or are making, significant contributions to the Miami Valley community.

“In the three years of the ‘Dayton Skyscrapers’ project, we find that we have only begun to scratch the surface of celebrating the many African-Americans who have made an impact on our community,” Davis said.

Eleven artists from the Miami Valley, including Davis, have created pieces which were inspired by both historical figures of Dayton as well as those who are continuing to spread their impact. The participating artists include Abner Cope, Dwayne Daniel, Clifford Darrett, Willis “Bing” Davis, Lois Fortson, Jerome Ingram, James Pate, Thelma Patterson, William Pettiford III, Paula Ramey and Frances Turner.

Among those who provided inspiration for this year’s exhibit are Natasha Williams, Rashad Young, “Bootsie” Neal, Leo and Alyce Lucas, Jesse Gooding and Eddie Brookshire, to name just a few.

Visual Voices began in 2005 through a collaboration of Victoria Theatre Association and the Arts Center Foundation with Dayton Visual Arts Center and EbonNia Gallery.

On display from February 1 – 28, “Dayton Skyscrapers III” is free and open to the public, with viewing hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with some exceptions during performances and special events at the Schuster Center. The exhibit is located in the Mead Theatre lobby at the Schuster Center, adjacent to the Wintergarden.

Visual Voices is sponsored by The Dayton Power and Light Company Foundation. Visual Voices is part of Victoria Theatre Association’s second African-American Arts Festival, which is sponsored by KeyBank.

As we begin a new year, there’s been a lot of talk about change. Change in our country’s leadership with inauguration day. Change in our community. Even change here at Victoria Theatre Association.

I guess we can all agree that change is the one constant. Names and faces come and go, but Victoria Theatre Association remains a strong force in our community, adding much to the quality of life we enjoy here in the Miami Valley. Since my years on the board of trustees in the early 1990s, I’ve seen many changes – but this organization’s commitment to serving the community, by providing the very best performing arts entertainment and the very best customer service, has never wavered.

There’s a strong team of professionals here that truly cares about serving this community. As we look ahead to the future, I can’t help but smile with anticipation. There’s so much yet in store!

We’ll be announcing the new 2009-2010 season in just a few short weeks. Renewal packets for the new Broadway lineup will be going out just prior to THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. We’ve already let the cat out of the bag about two blockbusters that will make the season one to remember: the Dayton premier of WICKED and the return of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. This spring, summer and beyond, downtown will be brimming with the very best in entertaining arts events – not only from Victoria Theatre Association but also from the other arts organizations. No need to travel to see great shows – there are all sorts of options right here in our own backyard.

Dayton has an arts & cultural community that cities of similar size only dream about. Sure, times are uncertain right now and may continue to be this way for a while. But Victoria Theatre Association is maintaining its vision to enrich the lives, learning and leisure of our community through the performing arts. With a mission to strengthen the artistic and economic vitality of our community and our arts partners through presenting quality and diverse arts experiences, and through stewardship of our state-of-the-art performance venues, Victoria Theatre Association is an integral part of what makes Dayton such a great place to live, work and play!

Help us keep doing what we do best by supporting us with a tax-deductible Annual Fund gift and by subscribing or purchasing single tickets so you can attend the performances of your choice. The arts belong to all of us, and it is up to all of us to keep them alive and well during both difficult and easier times!

Craig KargesLevitating tables, reading minds and bending metal are only a few of the experiences audiences will enjoy at the Victoria Theatre TONIGHT, when they Experience the Extraordinary with Craig Karges.

Don’t call him a magician and don’t call it an illusion.  Craig Karges doesn’t pull rabbits out of hats and he won’t be sawing any beautiful assistants in half.  Referring to himself as an Extraordinist, Karges creates an environment for his audience to physically experience.

Craig Karges’ performance is an extraordinary blend of mystery, humor, psychology and intuition. Karges dazzles the mind as he challenges his audiences to question what is real and what is unreal, what is possible and what is impossible. Dennis Miller, comedian and talk show host, put it this way after seeing Karges perform: “This weirds me out.”

Karges dramatizes the unknown, the unexplained and the unbelievable. You don’t just watch this performance; you experience it, through total audience participation.

Having performed on national television programs including “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Larry King Live,” Karges’ popularity and respectability are not quite as mysterious as the performance he has presented all over the world.

Craig Karges says that he does not possess supernatural powers, nor does he claim to perform as a psychic or a magician. While he acknowledges that he is an entertainer, and showmanship plays a role in what he does, he insists that he does not prearrange anything with members of the audience.

Ticket holders are invited to stop by Uno Chicago Grill after the performance for an exclusive cast party. Uno Chicago Grill is located next door to the Victoria Theatre at 126 North Main Street.
