ABOUT THE SHOW:
This year’s VISUAL VOICES art exhibit will kick off with the OHIO PLAYERS and THE DAYTON FUNK ALL-STARS in concert at the Schuster Center!

The OHIO PLAYERS came into musical prominence in the 1970s as pioneers of street funk and underground R&B. After signing with Mercury Records in 1974 through 1977, the OHIO PLAYERS landed three consecutive platinum albums Skin Tight, Fire  and Honey as well as two number one singles on the Billboard pop charts “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster” and five number one R&B singles “Funky Worm,””Fire,””Sweet Sticky Thing,” “Love Rollercoaster,” and “Who’d She Coo.”  The OHIO PLAYERS traveled the world and produced more than a dozen albums and received 14 gold and platinum awards for their labors. They also appeared on many national television programs with the likes of Dick Clark, Don Kushner, and David Letterman.  Since then, a long list of artists have sampled or re-recorded their material, including Snoop Dogg, Puff Daddy, Salt-N-Pepa, Too Short, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul Jackson, Jr., and Alex Bugnon. Currently the band consists of 10 members, four of which are original members: James “Diamond” Williams (drums), Billy Beck (keyboard), Clarence Willis (lead guitar), and Robert Kuumba (percussion).

THE DAYTON FUNK ALL-STARS is an old school funk band specializing in the “Dayton sound.” Featuring guitarist Tony (Silky T) Allen; lead vocalist Shauni Maque; lead keyboardist and talk box Deron (DB) Bell; and a full band and horn section.

VISUAL VOICES: VISIONS OF DAYTON FUNK (Feb. 1-March 31, 2014 in the Schuster Center) is an interactive visual art exhibit presented by Victoria Theatre Association and EbonNia Gallery and curated by Willis “Bing” Davis. For the 2014 VISUAL VOICES exhibit, artists were challenged to create visual art that captures the essence and flavor of the Dayton funk sound. Students from the Ponitz Career Technology Center (Dayton Public Schools) have trained with WYSO 91.3FM Community Voices radio project to record and edit interviews with the artists, musicians and others about the artists’ creative process and to provide a historical perspective on the Dayton funk movement.

LENGTH:
THE DAYTON FUNK ALL-STARS will play for approximately 30 minutes. The OHIO PLAYERS will play for approximately 90 minutes. There will be 20 minute intermission between THE DAYTON FUNK ALL-STARS and the OHIO PLAYERS
