Join us for a Dayton holiday tradition: Fifth Third Bank Wintergarden Wonderland!

Free activities are offered throughout the holiday season. First, the whole family can enjoy the Rike’s Wonderland Windows in the Schuster Center Wintergarden. The animated elves and animals first appeared in NCR’s New York office windows in 1943, but many Daytonians remember them from their annual holiday pilgrimage to the Rike’s Department Store which sat on the corner of Second and Main Streets (where the Schuster Center now sits).

Then, the little ones can visit Santa, shop for holiday gifts at The Tike’s Shoppe and create holiday ornaments with K12 Gallery. Plus, live music on Dec. 7 and 8!

The secret is…space ice cream!

  • Elf Workshop Window: There’s an ice cream sandwich under the plate of cookies.
  • Woodland Window: There’s a pink ice cream chunk in the scoop of the baking table.
  • Bathing Bubbles Window: There are vanilla ice cream dots on lace of tub.
  • Riverscape Window: There’s pink ice cream on the dog’s tongue.
  • 1950s Window: There’s vanilla ice cream on the Christmas tree on top of TV.
  • Victorian Window: There’s a chocolate dot on the Santa ornament’s eyes.

Also known as astronaut ice cream or freeze-dried ice cream, space ice cream is a slab of ready-to-eat dehydrated ice cream. Compared to regular ice cream, it can be kept at room temperature without melting and is more brittle and rigid but still soft when bitten into. It was developed by Whirlpool Corporation under contract to NASA for the Apollo missions. Freeze-dried foods were developed so that foods could be sent on long-duration spaceflights, as to the Moon, and to reduce the weight of the water and oxygen normally found in food. (Wikipedia)

You can buy your very own space ice cream in the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force gift shop!
