Converted Streets Open to Two-Way Traffic May 3, 2010
Look both ways! Sections of several downtown streets that have been one-way for almost 50 years will open to two-way traffic. The City of Dayton has been working on the two-way conversion as part of its year-long project to improve the accessibility, traffic flow and appearance of downtown's infrastructure, and plans to open the converted streets this week.
The following street sections are scheduled to open to two-way traffic Monday, May 3, 2010:
- Monument Avenue (from Patterson Boulevard to Webster Street)
- Patterson Boulevard (from Monument Avenue to Second Street)
- First Street (from Patterson Boulevard to Jefferson Street)
Following these conversions, sections of two additional streets are scheduled to open to two-way traffic on Friday, May 7, 2010:
- Second Street (from Red Cross Lane to Patterson Boulevard)
- Fourth Street (from Robert Drive to St. Clair Street)
Old habits die hard, so make sure you check both directions before you step off that curb, and watch for changes in traffic patterns, street signs and signals while driving!
To accommodate these changes in traffic flow, the city has been resurfacing and restriping several downtown streets over the past few weeks. In addition to the new two-way streets, bike lanes or sharrows (lanes marked for shared bicycle and vehicle use) are being added to Fourth, Fifth and St. Clair Streets among other locations, and the stimulus-funded Downtown Gateway Project will add landscaped gateway areas and replace selected sidewalks and curbs for better pedestrian accessibility.
